The Lost Form of Leadership: The Power of Fatherhood
As I have reflected on my role as a father, I have realized the immense responsibility that comes with this role. We often seek and aspire for leadership roles, losing sight of the opportunities before us. Last week, I was grateful to talk with my good friend, Kirk Coburn, on the EZ Conversations podcast (Listen Here). We explored the journey of fatherhood and the trials and tribulations that come with this role. Being a father is crucial, and our impact can last an eternity. However, we seldom see that in society today, and many people tend to seek fulfilment in different ways and capacities. However, we can embrace this responsibility only by completely leaning into it.
As Kirk and I discussed during the episode, as leaders and fathers, we must role model and guide our children through actions first. Like any form of leadership, we must walk the walk to maintain the trust of those looking to us for direction. Furthermore, as fathers, our role isn't to be tyrants and rule over our children. We must build healthy and nurturing relationships where our children feel comfortable challenging us when they disagree. We must demonstrate humility and openness to make and learn from mistakes. We can cultivate long-lasting bonds with our children through open and honest conversations. Therefore, in this week's edition of EZ Reflections, I wanted to expand on the leadership of fatherhood and share additional resources from which we can all learn.
Fathers play a crucial role in their children's cognitive, emotional, and social development.
Emotional and Psychological Well-being
The presence of a supportive father contributes significantly to a child's emotional and psychological well-being. According to research published in the Journal of Family Psychology, children who feel a close bond with their fathers are:
75% less likely to experience depression
80% less likely to engage in delinquent behaviour
50% less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol
This research underscores the importance of fatherly affection and support in fostering a healthy mental state and reducing risky behaviours.
Fatherhood and Leadership: Setting the Example
Fatherhood inherently involves leadership. Fathers are often the first role models for their children, influencing their values, attitudes, and behaviours. Influential fathers demonstrate leadership through the following:
Setting Clear Expectations: Establishing rules and boundaries helps children understand what is expected and promotes a sense of security.
Leading by Example: Children learn by observing their parents. Fathers who exhibit integrity, responsibility, and empathy instill these values in their children.
Encouraging Independence: Good fathers encourage their children to think independently, make decisions, and learn from their experiences.
A study by the Pew Research Center found that 72% of adults believe that having a father who provides financial support is critical, but 69% also emphasize the importance of a father who provides emotional support. This balance of economic and emotional leadership is essential in shaping well-rounded individuals.
Societal Impact of Fatherhood
The influence of fatherhood extends beyond the family unit and has significant societal implications. Communities with active and engaged fathers tend to experience the following:
Lower Crime Rates: Areas with higher levels of father involvement have been shown to have lower crime rates. The National Fatherhood Initiative reports that children from fatherless homes account for 63% of youth suicides and 85% of children with behavioural disorders.
Economic Stability: Fathers who provide stable financial support contribute to the economic stability of their families and communities. This reduces the burden on social services and promotes economic growth.
More robust Social Networks: Engaged fathers often participate in community activities, fostering a sense of belonging and support within the community.
