In last week's episode of EZ Conversations, I had an in-depth conversation with Marcus Aurelius Higgs about the role we can play in empowering the next generation. In our pursuit of belonging, achievement, or acceptance, we often lose the very thing that makes us unique: our sovereign expression.
Our conversation kept returning to the idea of living without intentionality. It is remarkably easy to operate on autopilot, allowing circumstances, expectations, and social pressures to dictate our choices. Yet the moment we stop questioning how we live, we begin to give away our agency.
As I reflected on our discussion, I realized that sovereign expression extends far beyond parenting. In a world increasingly defined by polarization, constant opinions, and endless demands on our attention, what would happen if we cultivated the courage to think independently? What if we trusted ourselves enough to govern our own minds rather than allowing every headline, algorithm, or expectation to govern them for us?
Perhaps we would experience less overwhelm, less anxiety, and less fear—not because the world became any less chaotic, but because our attention would shift toward what we can actually influence instead of becoming consumed by everything we cannot.
This is something we frequently explore in therapy. While we cannot control every circumstance or even every thought that enters our minds, we can decide which thoughts deserve our attention and which actions align with our values. That choice is where agency begins. Every meaningful change starts there.
The thought leaders I have been fortunate to speak with over the years often arrive at a similar conclusion. Regardless of their backgrounds or disciplines, they have learned that freedom is not something granted by external circumstances. It is cultivated internally through clarity, discipline, and intentional living.
Freedom, then, is not simply a physical construct. It is a mental state.
But freedom comes at a cost. To become truly free, we must first escape the prison of our own minds—a prison built from expectations, stereotypes, fear, and the stories we have inherited about who we are supposed to be. That transformation rarely happens overnight. It begins with small, deliberate decisions that gradually move us toward a life that feels more authentic than performative.
Sovereign expression is not about becoming someone different.
It is about having the courage to become who we were before the world convinced us otherwise.
If the first three S's allow us to feel secure in the world, the fourth S—sovereign expression—is what finally allows us to live freely within it.
