The Alchemy of Life

The Alchemy of Life

In last week's episode of EZ Conversations, I had the opportunity to have a deep conversation with Alan Lazaros (Listen Here). Alan shares his journey of overcoming early life adversity, the need to achieve, and finally finding a place on his journey to give back. One of the things we touched on during the episode was the role our shadow has in our lives. Unfortunately, if we do not face this shadow self, it can continue to run us rather than us integrating it. One of the words that kept coming up for me last week was alchemy. The ancient art of alchemy is not something we understand as much now, but it is very much prevalent in our lives. The ability to take dust and make gold out of it is the story for anyone who has been resilient. There is an aspect of duality that is so profound regarding alchemy.

In this edition of EZ Reflections, I wanted to expand on how we can use our light and shadow to alchemize something beautiful and resilient—our healed selves. So many people have not let their past experiences define them, but they have grabbed life by the horns and chosen what legacy they will leave behind. Through the alchemical transformation, we can gain self-awareness and wisdom. A study by the American Psychological Association found that individuals who acknowledge and integrate their shadow aspects are more likely to experience psychological well-being and reduced levels of anxiety and depression.

How can you be the alchemist in your life? Here are some tools and resources that you can also consider:

  • Self-Reflection: Begin by setting aside regular time for self-reflection. Journaling is a powerful tool to explore your thoughts and feelings. Ask yourself questions about your fears, desires, and reactions. What triggers you? What are you avoiding?

  • Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness to become more aware of your thoughts and emotions as they arise. Mindfulness helps you observe your shadow without judgment, creating a safe space for exploration.

  • Therapy and Counseling: Seek professional help if needed. A therapist can provide a safe environment to explore your shadow and offer guidance on integrating these aspects into your conscious self.

  • Creative Expression: Engage in creative activities such as writing, painting, or music. Creativity allows the unconscious to express itself, providing insights into your shadow.

  • Community and Support: Join support groups or communities encouraging self-exploration and growth. Sharing your journey with others can provide new perspectives and encouragement.

A meta-analysis of over 200 studies on self-reflection and mindfulness practices found that these activities are associated with a 10-20% reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression—additionally, individuals who regularly self-reflect report higher life satisfaction and emotional well-being.

“If people can be educated to see the shadow-side of their nature clearly, it may be hoped that they will also learn to understand and love their fellow man better.”
