The Antidote to Depression
The Antidote to Depression
In last week's episode of EZ Conversations, I sat down with Dr. Scott Kolbaba (Listen Here), and we discussed a very crucial topic in society today: the epidemic of depression that consumes our youth. However, the problem does not just stop with adolescents; it has become prevalent among everyone. The antidote to depression that Dr. Kolbaba offers is a sense of purpose that can give us meaning and passion to navigate depression. While I have spent time exploring the value of having a purpose, I wanted to expand on how a comparison mindset can be debilitating for people.
The concept of depression is interesting because there is much controversy around it. Some people have created controversy by suggesting depression is self-induced. That notion may not account for seasonal contributions toward depression; however, I agree that we influence our depressed states—one of the aspects that Dr. Kolbaba and I covered in the episode was the influence of social media and how comparison impacts us all, especially youth. This is where purpose plays a significant role because if we can all identify our unique contribution to this world by using our passions as a guide, we can experience contentment, joy and confidence in how we live our lives. It is easier said than done because it is a daily battle and a part of the journey we must embark on. We tend to suffer without meaning in our existence, which is exacerbated when we compare ourselves to others. Unfortunately, social media is perversely in our faces to remind us how our lives "don't measure up."
Therefore, in this week's edition of EZ Reflections, I wanted to stress the importance of having a purpose in our lives. As Dr. Kolbaba and I share in the episode, if, as parents, we have a purpose, we can help our children identify their own. Without a purpose in life, we will all feel lost and look to others for direction, but we will never feel fulfilled.
Global Statistics
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression globally.
Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide and contributes significantly to the global burden of disease.
The prevalence of depression varies significantly between countries, with some reporting rates as high as 6% of the population affected annually.
Depression in the United States
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that an estimated 17.3 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in 2017. This number represents 7.1% of all U.S. adults.
Depression is more prevalent among females (8.7%) compared to males (5.3%).
The age group most affected by depression is young adults aged 18-25, with a prevalence rate of 13.1%.
Comparison Across Demographics
Gender: Women are generally more likely to experience depression than men. Biological, hormonal, and social factors contribute to this disparity.
Age: Depression can occur at any age, but it is particularly prevalent among young adults and the elderly. Young adults face unique stressors related to life transitions, while older adults may deal with isolation and physical health issues.
Socioeconomic Status: Individuals with lower socioeconomic status are at higher risk for depression due to factors such as financial stress, limited access to healthcare, and exposure to adverse life events.
How Purpose Helps
Provides Motivation: A clear sense of purpose motivates individuals to take action and pursue goals, which can counter feelings of hopelessness and inertia associated with depression.
Enhances Resilience: People with a strong sense of purpose are better equipped to handle stress and adversity, as they have a broader perspective on life's challenges.
Improves Mental Health: Research has shown that individuals with a high sense of purpose experience lower levels of depression and anxiety. They are more likely to engage in healthy behaviours and maintain positive relationships.
Increases Life Satisfaction: Purposeful individuals tend to have higher life satisfaction and overall well-being, a buffer against depressive symptoms.
Finding Your Purpose
Finding a sense of purpose is a personal journey that involves self-reflection and exploration. Here are some steps to help you discover and cultivate your purpose:
Reflect on Your Values: Could you identify what matters most to you? Your values can guide your decisions and actions, providing a foundation for your purpose.
Set Meaningful Goals: Define goals that align with your values and passions. Break them down into smaller, achievable steps.
Engage in Activities You Enjoy: Participate in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. These activities can provide clues to your more profound sense of purpose.
Connect with Others: Building relationships and contributing to your community can give your life greater meaning and belonging.
Seek Professional Help: If you're struggling to find your purpose or dealing with depression, consider seeking help from a mental health professional. They can provide support and guidance.
