Protecting Your Energy
Protecting Your Energy
I reflected on last week and my conversation with Christian Elliot (Listen Here), during which we discussed toxicity and how it can present itself in many realms and layers. We explored the toxicity in the foods we consume, the environments we expose ourselves to, and even people. Ultimately, we need to become more mindful of our choices and aware of what is going into our bodies. As I emphasized during the episode, everything has energy, and we must be careful of what we absorb. As often is the case, the message kept reinforcing itself in my personal life like a mirror throughout the week. I could reflect further in group sessions and be completely honest with myself. That is where recovery begins; when we start to be honest with ourselves, we can then silence the voice of shame we all have. We can then start making choices from the point of clarity rather than from fear of rejection or abandonment. We only suffer when we seek pleasure or escape pain.
As I continued to reflect on my personal life, I realized that while I have made great strides in eliminating toxicity from my life, there are still areas that can use further improvement. Rather than beating myself up, how can I get more curious and compassionate with myself? There is fear, there is shame, and there are tendencies of feeling like the victim or wanting to rescue others, but as I have realized on my path thus far, I am only responsible for my journey, and that is what I will take with me when I contemplate mortality. Yet, we are all human and must go through our unique experiences while identifying the areas for healing. As most of us know, it doesn't happen overnight, and sometimes, we have to relive the same lesson repeatedly until we are ready to make a change. The pain is a messenger, not something that we need to avoid. Fortunately, suffering is optional. So, I'd like to share how we can protect our energy in this week's edition of EZ Reflections:
1. Food as Fuel: The Foundation of Vibrant Energy
The Impact of Nutritional Choices on Energy Levels
The food you eat directly affects your energy levels. Diets high in processed foods, added sugars, and unhealthy fats can lead to energy crashes and chronic fatigue. In contrast, whole, nutrient-dense foods provide sustained energy and promote overall vitality.
Research Insight: A study published in The Lancet (2019) found that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are associated with improved mental and physical energy levels, while diets high in processed foods increase the risk of depression and fatigue.
Tips for Energy-Boosting Nutrition
Focus on complex carbohydrates like quinoa, oats, and sweet potatoes for sustained energy.
Include high-quality proteins such as eggs, legumes, and lean meats.
Embrace healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, and olive oil.
Stay hydrated; even mild dehydration can impair energy levels.
Minimize caffeine and alcohol intake to prevent energy fluctuations.
2. Reducing Toxins in Everyday Products
Understanding the Toxic Burden
Household and personal care products often contain harmful chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and formaldehyde. These chemicals can disrupt hormones and drain energy over time.
Research Insight: The Endocrine Society (2015) highlights that endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in many everyday products can lead to fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and long-term health issues.
Steps to Minimize Toxins
Opt for natural or organic products free of synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals.
Use glass or stainless steel containers instead of plastic to avoid BPA exposure.
Prioritize cleaning products with plant-based ingredients.
Consider air purifiers to reduce indoor air pollutants.
3. Creating Energetically Healthy Environments
Physical Spaces and Their Impact on Energy
Cluttered and poorly lit spaces can drain energy and contribute to stress. Conversely, clean, organized, and well-lit environments enhance focus and tranquillity.
Research Insight: A 2020 study in The Journal of Environmental Psychology found that organized and aesthetically pleasing spaces are linked to reduced cortisol levels and improved well-being.
Tips for Energizing Your Space
Declutter regularly to remove unnecessary distractions.
Incorporate natural light and houseplants to promote positive energy.
Use calming colours and decor to create a soothing atmosphere.
Limit exposure to electronic devices and establish tech-free zones.
4. Protecting Your Energy from Toxic People and Environments
The Emotional Energy Drain of Toxic Relationships
Interacting with hostile or manipulative individuals can leave you feeling emotionally depleted. Toxic environments, such as workplaces with poor communication and high stress, drain energy.
Research Insight: A 2017 study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin highlights the significant impact of social interactions on emotional well-being, with toxic relationships linked to increased anxiety and exhaustion.
Strategies for Protecting Emotional Energy
Set firm boundaries with individuals who drain your energy.
Practice mindfulness to maintain emotional equilibrium.
Surround yourself with supportive and uplifting people.
Seek therapy or counselling to navigate challenging relationships.
