The Art of Healing Without Words

In a recent episode of EZ Conversations, I had the privilege of sitting down with classical pianist and author Jeeyoon Kim. What stayed with me long after our conversation wasn’t only her musical mastery, but the way she spoke about music as a language beyond words—a space where emotion, memory, and meaning converge.

Jeeyoon openly shared the pain, loss, and grief she has endured, and how she has learned to incorporate those experiences into her performances. Psychological research tells us that healing does not come from avoiding suffering, but from integrating it—through meaning-making, connection, and contribution. Music, in this way, becomes more than sound. It becomes a container for what cannot be said, yet must still be felt.

At one point in our conversation, Jeeyoon reflected on the outside voices she has heard—that she is not changing the world. While she acknowledges that perspective, she does not accept the idea that she is not making a difference. What I heard was a quiet conviction rooted not in outcome, but in alignment. Research on intrinsic motivation consistently shows that fulfillment comes not from recognition or scale, but from living in accordance with one’s values and sense of purpose.

As I reflected on this exchange, I noticed a clear parallel with my own work as a therapist. Recently, someone I deeply respect asked me to share how having a spiritual practice has shaped my growth. I was struck by how difficult it is to articulate these experiences with language. Like music, spirituality often operates beyond cognition. Studies in psychology and neuroscience suggest that experiences of awe, transcendence, and deep presence quiet the mind’s habitual self-narration, allowing emotional integration and a sense of connection beyond oneself.

When asked whether my religion enables that connection, I shared that my faith deepens my relationship with a Higher Power—but I can also access that connection in moments of stillness, silence, and surrender. Healing, I’ve come to realize, is not always about understanding more. Often, it begins when we loosen our grip on control and listen.

This is the power of healing without words. Whether through music, art, spirituality, or quiet presence, we receive messages that cannot be explained or analyzed. They move through us instead. And sometimes, that is enough.

Reflection:
Where in your life have you experienced healing without words—through presence, art, silence, or connection beyond explanation?

If this reflection resonated with you, I invite you to listen to the full conversation with Jeeyoon Kim on EZ Conversations. In the episode, we explore her journey as a classical pianist, the role of music in healing and meaning-making, and how artistic expression can bridge pain and purpose.
